How do I cope with my husband's controlling boss?

My husband works for a very controlling boss. I rue the day he hounded my husband into coming on board. He was happy in his old job and now is stressed beyond belief. He is paid better but is no executive. The boss expects a lot in terms of work & social commitment. He will from time to time drop in to our home after work unannounced, both my husband and he having had a skinful. The boozy culture is also a worry to me as my husband has put on a lot of weight. The boss almost seems to get pleasure out of seeing my mood when a hot meal sits for an hour while we politely wait for him to leave. If he did this out of ignorance I wouldn't mind but he smirks and come across as very manipulative. My husband doesn't really like his job but like most people sticks with it because he now has no choice. He almost jumped ship but this guy suckered him once again. Do I just need to let this go or does anyone have any words of wisdom as this is putting a strain on our 16 year marriage?
