I want to become a Barrister?

I'm 17 years old, in the middle of my A-levels. I'm studying History,English, Maths and Physics. I was contemplating a career as a Barrister. I understand that to become one, you need to obtain a law degree through University. Is there any advice anyone can provide me with in order to aid my endeavour at a career in law? What are the hours/salaries like? Initially, I was very eager to become one, but after someone telling me that I would not be suited to it because I'm not a great public speaker, I'm a bit apprehensive that I will get a law degree and find out I haven't got the confidence to prosper as a Barrister. Any advice would be appreciated. Many regards.
